Fantasy

We all have all different types of fantasies. Some of mine I can’t talk about – but the others usually have to do with creative opportunities. Whether it is designing amazing products or being approached to form new partnerships, they somehow always come full circle to a really good opportunity. I fantasize constantly; sitting on a plane and thinking how I could redesign that plane’s interiors, or hearing from a friend of mine that he is doing a palace in the Middle East, and then fantasizing about what I envision a palace in the Middle East being.

Recently, in designing a bathroom for a client, I started with a fantasy of what my dream bathroom would be. I envisioned this open Roman temple with flowing curtains, fountains and water running, kind of like a movie set, and from there I thought, wow, wouldn’t it be interesting to create something that has the essence of a Roman bathroom. So I created a double sink cabinet with legs out of statuary marble carved in Roman style with a marble top and then a floor that was inspired by an actual roman bathroom in Pompei. Dreaming opened up my imagination to creating a reality.

I’m a firm believer that if we can visualize what our fantasies are, it’s the first step towards making it happen. So if you want to do product partnerships, you fantasize about it and envision it in your mind and that’s the beginning. Whatever you can conceive and put out there so they can become a reality, have a bigger chance of seeing the light of day. (Have you seen The Secret?) You have to dream it for it to become reality. I think that the more you keep your mind open and allow it to just wander and dream, special reality can come from it. At least a reality that steps outside the norm. If you all have any fantasies that you want to share (just keep it G-rated!) concerning design, why don’t you share it with all of us and give it the first step towards becoming a reality!

  • I do this all the time! I’ll be sitting in a friend’s house and I’ll start redecorating in my mind…and this is how my business started. Those friends started asking me what I thought, and before you know it, I was putting my fantasies into action. And then the referrals started coming. I’ve fantasized about starting a fabric line, and now…the puzzle pieces are falling into place. It’s true, you have to believe it for it to start “being”.

  • I am dreaming always! I make over my house, places I see, the schools my children attend, my neighbor’s homes and outfits, haircuts, everything.
My fantasy is that I will be finally discovered as a talented decorator with clients who want my expertese and can’t wait to get me started…
Unlike the littleshop above, lately nothing has happed. My last project was sdone in March, since then it has been quiet! But I do not give up! I keep blogging and hang in there…

  • i’ve been doing that all my life…
usually more with re-dressing people in my mind, but also with redoing rooms I see. I can go into a room and in an instant, have a room completed in my mind. It happens in a flash…
I do have to say that now I find beauty, even in places that I would normally be overly critical of..
Just to find the grace in what is…

  • Great post. You are absolutely right…its important to really envision your design/business goals…I am in the process of redefining my business right now! Any good tips for success with crossing over from straight interior design to product design and partnerships?!

    My fantasy:

Me: VW, I’d really appreciate it if you’d give me a hand decorating my home.

VW: I can think of nothing I’d rather do, Dawn…when can we start?

Oh, not what you meant?? Hmmm, well I, too, redecorate/redress interiors and people ALL the time; its sick, I tell ya! I also believe one needs to set goals and visualize them in order for them to become reality. My husband and I built our “dream” home several years ago and before we were even moved in, I had the desire to do it again. I pictured the lot, the rooms, the decor. It was quite an accomplishment for me to get husband on board, sell our home in this economy, get husband on board, find a lot, move into rental, get husband on board, design and build this home. We both love, love, love it!

  • Early on in my career, while getting my Masters in Architecture, I started designing cards. I started selling them in my town and eventually sold them to Neiman Marcus and Hudson’s, Dayton’s and Marshall Fields cold calling; I dreamed BIG right off the bat and those dreams paid off. My fantasy was to parlay that into having a line of interior goods, such as fabrics, bedding, dishes, lamps, furniture, etc…. becoming a brand!! I then entered into a bad partnership that tried to change my dream and put it to a halt. I let this person convince me that my vision was wrong and I needed to follow their recipe for my success. My gut told me differently, but I didn’t follow it. So I completely believe that what you think grows. Years later, my fantasy is still the same. I have been putting out to the Universe that I want to have a line of interior goods and am open to any creative opportunity and am excited about it. I am continuing to do quality work that I believe in for my clients and have started a blog as another creative outlet. I fantasize daily about being a presence in the design world and helping people find luxury in their own surroundings, whatever they are or wherever they are. Afterall, design is personal, design is accessible, design is achievable… and so are my dreams!!

  • I love your thoughts on this Vicente. It is my mantra to be positive and dream big. I loved The Secret both the movie and the book!

  • I did a blog post on my dream, which is to run the Ralph Pucci Showroom in Los Angeles. I talk about it as much as possible and pray every night. But as well as putting the energy out there you also have to plan, make lists, and follow up on baby steps and short term goals to get there. I have seen how good energy has magically brought me something before and it really works!
